History
Modern day Spiritual Humanism became an established fact when in 1893, in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda greeted the audience with a "Sisters and brothers of America, in the name of the oldest order of monks in the world, I welcome you to this august assembly" *1. The warmth of his heart won him a standing ovation.
Nearly 2 decades later, after Swami Vivekananda's passing, he would appear in the solitary cell of a freedom fighter named Aurobindo Ghosh, who was in detention in Alipore. The inmate was to rise from the accusations that shackled him. A year later he gave his famous speech at Uttarpara in 1909, emerging as Sri Aurobindo - the poet, philosopher and now, YOGI.
A yogi is a man/woman who understands in all its facets and shades, the union of humanity with the cosmic divine (LOVE). He then works ceaselessly to establish Truth on Earth - for it is writ "Satyameva Jayathe" - Truth Alone Triumphs. He attains Samadhi (enlightenment) and becomes "Sat Chit Ananda" - Existence, Consciousness, BLISS.
Countless Rishis, Seers, Prophets and Saints have helped Humanity since the inception of time (the first visphota of the Cosmos - big bang) and given us the advantage of "standing on the shoulder's of giants" *2.
One such giant was Sri Aurobindo, along with his collaborator Mirra Alfassa, later simply known as "The Mother". Around them, their companions and followers would form the Sri Aurobindo Ashram that would blossom in Pondicherry, South India.
After Sri Aurobindo's passing in 1950, The Mother would go on to found the spiritual town of Auroville in 1968 a few years before she too attained Maha-samadhi.
In 1989, the Founders of the Sri Aurobindo Dhama travelled to Pondicherry and were amazed at the smooth working of this "ashram". After establishing the "Om Shanti Dhama" with it's gurukula, they saw evolving in the mental plane, a new Dhama (abode) rising in it's midst.
The foundation stone of Sri Aurobindo Dhama was laid on 1st Feb 2015 by His Excellency Vajubhai Vala, Governor of Karnataka. A few years later, the doors of the meditation hall / library and yoga hall was thrown open to the public on 15th August 2018 (on the 146th year of Sri Aurobindo's birth).
It is the objective of Sri Aurobindo Dhama to help establish a "Supraja (Good Progeny) Project" by continuing the work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
To Thee who hast been the material envelope of our Master, to Thee our infinite gratitude. Before Thee who hast done so much for us, who hast worked, struggled, suffered, hoped, endured so much, before Thee who hast willed all, attempted all, prepared, achieved all for us, before Thee we bow down and implore that we may never forget, even for a moment, all we owe to Thee.
Mirra Alfassa, in 1950 when Sri Aurobindo left his body.
It is now our turn to "work, suffer, hope". Join us in our endeavours to free the heart from egoism and lust and instead fill it with divine virtues.
Now in 2021, the adjoining Sadhak's quarters (Kuteers) are being readied and planning for the "Supraja (Good Progeny) Project" is under way. Plantation of Pavitra Vanas (sacred plants and trees) has been done, and this forest has now taken root.
